Get your berets ready and maybe grab a baguette because we’re heading to France. Although, not in actuality, if you view Nouvelle Vague, Richard Linklater’s black-and-white homage to French film, you might feel like you are strolling by the Seine.

The movie follows Jean-Luc Godard (Guillaume Marbeck), a 29-year-old movie reviewer, who is tired of just viewing films and wants to create his own. He soon realizes this isn’t simple, so he enlists his fellow critics, a difficult lead actor, Jean-Paul Belmondo (Aubry Dullin), and a youthful American actress, Jean Seberg (Zoey Deutch), hoping to breathe life back into her fading career, for assistance. Godard’s initial experimental movie, Breathless, surprisingly becomes a groundbreaking piece that transforms filmmaking, viewing, and critique. Nouvelle Vague may not quite achieve the same level, but it offers an enjoyable and lighthearted revisit of film history.
