The proposed MAMDANI Act aims to cut off federal funding to New York City following the swearing-in of a socialist official.

FIRST ON FOX: A House Republican lawmaker is putting forward a plan to cut off federal funding to New York City as long as Zohran Mamdani holds the office of mayor.

The proposed legislation, spearheaded by Rep. Buddy Carter, R-Ga., is titled the Moving American Money Distant from Anti-National Interests Act, or, for short, the “MAMDANI Act.”

The bill’s text, spanning two pages, stipulates that “notwithstanding any other legal provision, during any period in which Zohran Mamdani serves as mayor of New York, New York,” “any Federal funds available” to the city that are “unobligated are hereby rescinded,” and “no Federal funds may be obligated or spent for any purpose in New York, New York.”

The 34-year-old socialist secured victory in the New York City mayoral election on Tuesday, defeating former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.

His win was anticipated by those following the election closely; New York City has not seen a Republican mayor since Michael Bloomberg’s second term win in 2005.

While the likelihood of Carter’s bill passing in the House is slim, it highlights the GOP’s intense focus on Mamdani’s victory, with Republican leaders in the House framing him as the emerging figurehead of the Democratic Party.

A Republican campaign strategist informed Fox News Digital on Wednesday that the GOP plans to link vulnerable Democrats nationwide to Mamdani and his radical left-leaning platforms.

Carter, currently campaigning for U.S. Senate in Georgia, stated that taxpayer money from his state “should not be squandered on initiatives that will lead to the financial ruin of the world’s financial hub.”

“If the residents of New York desire communism, we should grant them their wish and refrain from propping them up with our thriving capitalist system,” Carter remarked. “Any New Yorker possessing common sense is welcome to relocate to the exceptional, FREE state of Georgia.”

Historically, New York State has contributed more in taxpayer dollars to the federal government than it receives in federal funding.
