The narrative of Argo seems utterly implausible, until you discover that most of the film is based on true events. Ben Affleck not only directed the movie, but also played the role of CIA operative Tony Mendez, a man grappling with a significant professional challenge. In 1979, during the Iranian Revolution, an embassy was seized, and American hostages were taken, but six individuals found refuge in the residence of Canadian ambassador Ken Taylor (Victor Garber).
Given that Canadians possessed greater freedom of movement than Americans at that moment, Mendez devises a fictitious sci-fi film to be shot in Iran, aiming to present the six Americans as part of the Canadian film production team. This concept is so outlandish that it just might be successful, assuming it doesn’t lead to their demise.
