Boston Blue explored the strained dynamic between Donnie Wahlberg’s character, Danny Reagan, and his on-screen son as they navigated living together.
In the episode broadcasted on Friday, November 14, within the Blue Bloods universe, Danny opened up to Lena (Sonequa Martin-Green) about his challenges with Sean (Mika Amonsen).
“That sandwich was for Sean. We were planning to have breakfast, but he skipped it to go for a run,” he shared. “I support him staying active, but I also want to spend quality time with him.”
Lena suggested that sharing an apartment could be the source of the issues. Danny disagreed, countering, “It’s actually going really well, and we’re having a lot of fun. That’s why I thought we should continue living together to maintain our closeness.”
Later, Sean confided in his partner, Jonah (Marcus Scribner), about their growing pains, especially after an argument about Danny making his adult son’s bed.
“I can’t ask him to move out. He changed his whole life for me, and I appreciate spending time with him,” Sean admitted. “But I do wish he would leave at the end of the night.”

Sean decided to address the matter when apologizing to Danny for the recent “tense” atmosphere at home.
“I’m the one who should be sorry. I’m intruding on your space,” Danny responded. “I think it’s time I found my own place.”
Eventually, the pair found a resolution, with Sean deciding to live with Jonah while Danny remained in his apartment. Since Danny’s move from New York to Boston, the Reagans have experienced both highs and lows.
CBS’ Blue Bloods, which aired from 2010 until 2024, chronicled Danny’s time in New York. The spinoff began in October, showing Danny’s arrival in Boston following Sean’s coma. Sean’s character now looks different, with Mika Amonsen taking over the role previously held by Andrew Terraciano.
Coshowrunner Brandon Margolis explained the change last month to Variety, stating, “We value Andrew and his contributions to Blue Bloods over the years. Ultimately, we decided to tell a new story in both of their lives.”
Margolis went on, “Sean isn’t just following in the family footsteps by joining the police force; Danny Reagan is also experiencing being the father of a cop for the first time.”
The screenwriter described the recasting as “a natural chance to introduce a fresh performance with a new dynamic, highlighting the change.” The writing team was excited about the “new storytelling avenues to explore” within the spinoff.
“It’s the same character, the same relationship, but also something completely new,” Margolis added. “We appreciate what Mika brings to Sean: a sense of vulnerability mixed with a strong desire to prove himself. It’s been wonderful to see it develop.”
In another TVLine interview, Margolis mentioned how much he “loved” watching Terraciano “grow up on TV,” adding that “it made creative sense to look for an actor with a different kind of energy.”
Margolis concluded, “To your point, yes, starting the show with a new face—actually, two new faces—was risky, but the story required viewers to connect with him immediately. Opening with that heroic moment that has a tragic outcome was the perfect way to introduce Danny Reagan to this world.”
Boston Blue is broadcast on CBS on Fridays at 10 p.m. ET.
