Ray J’s Mother Claps Back at Commenter Claiming She Didn't Raise Her Son Well

Brandy and Ray J’s mom is not here for naysayers — especially when they’re aimed at her children.

“I hope you each experienced a thankful Thanksgiving. The day began a bit rough, though we enjoyed a lovely family Thanksgiving. Love you all, we’re traveling once again tomorrow,” wrote Sonja B. Norwood, the singers’ mother, via Facebook on Thursday, November 27, for the holiday. “Detroit! I’ll see you real soon!”

The proud mother — who is traveling with her daughter and Monica — ended her message with a heart emoji alongside the hashtags #familyfirst and #TheBoyIsMineTour.

“You raised a horrible son,” one person commented, talking about Ray J, whose real name is William Ray Norwood, Jr. “Happy Holidays!”

Sonja chose to reply, rather than disregard or delete the comment. “I disagree,” she responded.

“You believe throwing women in pools and brandishing guns is a fine representation of the man you raised,” the commenter replied. “I hope to do better by my kids.”

Ray J, 44, was taken into custody on Thursday morning following a call to authorities from Princess Love, his ex-wife, who stated that he had pointed a gun at her during an argument livestreamed. KTLA reports that police came to the 20000 block of Birmingham Way in Los Angeles at approximately 3:55 a.m. Thanksgiving morning.

Love also informed authorities about a purported background of domestic violence involving Ray J.

Us Weekly has confirmed that the singer was being held in a detention center near Los Angeles after his arrest and booking for allegedly making a criminal threat. His bail was set at $50,000. As of Saturday, November 29, it seems he is no longer detained.

Concerning video from the incident was distributed via social media. The video begins with Ray J saying, “You wanna operate a vehicle drunk? Wanna operate a vehicle drunk? Operate a vehicle drunk. Operate a vehicle drunk, Princess,” before Love says, “Ray, you just aimed a gun–”

“Operate a vehicle drunk, princess. Do it,” Ray J says. “You wanna take my children? With your drunk cousin? Since you’re drunk with alcoholics? Then take my kids, go ahead. Who will drive? Tony has been drinking too.”

“You aimed a gun at us; you aimed a gun at us,” Love goes on to say. Later, she adds, “Ray, you abuse women.”

“That’s what intoxicated [people] always say. Like, are you going to take my daughter?” Ray J answers.

The two, whose early married life was documented on VH1’s Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood, wed in August 2016 and have since begun divorce proceedings on four separate occasions. Love most recently filed for divorce in February 2024. Together, they have Melody Love, a daughter born in May 2018, and Epik Ray, a son who joined the family in January 2020.

Love initially filed for divorce from Ray J in May 2020. That petition was turned down in July 2020, though Ray J submitted his own divorce request months later in September 2020, only to withdraw it in March 2021. The singer filed again in October 2021, with a dismissal granted in March 2023.

“Parting ways is in our mutual best interest,” Love shared via Instagram in February 2024 after filing for divorce a fourth time. “We wish to assure you that this choice was made carefully with consideration and respect for one another’s well-being. While our relationship as spouses may be ending, we are still dedicated to raising our children together and keeping a healthy and encouraging family environment.”
