A bid by a Michigan County to memorialize Charlie Kirk has been unsuccessful.

Ferris State University has rejected a proposal to build a statue of Turning Point USA CEO Charlie Kirk, who was murdered a few weeks prior.

The proposal originated from Mecosta County’s Board of Commissioners, who voted to reach out to Ferris State University President Bill Pink to move forward with the process.

Pink responded with a letter denying the request, citing a university policy that only allows statues of individuals who impacted the school.

“While we condemn all violent actions and offer our condolences regarding Mr. Kirk’s untimely death, the University adheres to a longstanding rule that limits statues on campus to people who have made substantial, direct contributions to Ferris State University itself,” the letter said.

The only statue on campus dedicated to a person is that of the founder, Woodbridge N. Ferris.

“During the Sept. 18 meeting of the Mecosta County Board of Commissioners, Commissioner Chris Zimmerman, R-District 3, read a draft letter to the board to send to Pink suggesting that a statue of Charlie Kirk be built on the FSU campus. According to meeting minutes, he also showed the board a picture of a similar statue. The board voted 5-1 to approve sending the letter,” the Detroit Free Press reported.

YEARS OF CAMPUS ATTACKS ON CONSERVATIVE ACTIVISTS RESURFACE AFTER CHARLIE KIRK’S MURDER

Reportedly, board members discussed building a bronze statue of Kirk’s likeness in partnership with Ferris State University’s art department. The statue was also intended to have a plaque acknowledging the partnership between the board of commissioners and the university.

“Charlie’s talent for public speaking, debate style, and inspirational messages has impacted millions of people throughout our great nation. He had a special ability to engage young people in respectful discussions on various subjects that influenced public policy. No matter how awful his murder may be, we should not quickly forget his legacy,” the board of commissioners’ letter stated.

The organization has expanded and gained considerable support since Kirk was murdered Sept. 10 during an event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.

Following Kirk’s large memorial service on Sept. 13, TPUSA announced that it has received over 120,000 requests from people interested in starting new campus chapters.

There have been additional attempts to memorialize Kirk. According to reports, Oklahoma officials want to incorporate Kirk’s legacy into public higher-education institutions within the state.

To honor the late conservative activist who was murdered last month in Utah, a highway in Clermont, Florida, has been named after Kirk.

TPUSA runs 900 official college chapters and about 1,200 high school chapters.
