Apple is seemingly ending its support for Clips, as the company has removed Clips from the App Store and stated that no further updates will be made.
In a support document on Apple’s website, the company indicates that, beginning October 10, Clips is no longer downloadable for new users, but current users can still use the app on existing or older iOS and iPadOS versions. Current users can also re-download the app from their Apple account if necessary.
Without ongoing updates, using Clips will likely become increasingly challenging over time, so Apple is advising users to save their Clips videos (with or without effects) to their photo library, enabling them to view and modify the videos using other apps.
Introduced in 2017, Clips appeared to be Apple’s response to Snapchat and Instagram Stories — while not a social network, it enabled users to combine photos and videos with filters, emojis, and music.
Early on, TechCrunch’s Brian Heater characterized Clips’ video editing features as overly simplistic and proposed that the app could enable Apple to showcase its hardware and software capabilities while providing users an alternative to the then-growing social ecosystems.
MacRumors notes that while Apple enhanced Clips with new features following its launch, updates in recent years have been mostly limited to resolving bugs.
Apple enthusiasts on Reddit appeared unsurprised by the announcement, commenting that they’d only tried the app years ago or had never even heard of it. Moreover, an app like Clips — centered around authentic footage captured by real individuals — might seem somewhat dated when compared to Sora, OpenAI’s generative AI video app that recently surpassed 1 million downloads.
