Apple now enables you to store your passport within your phone’s Wallet, providing a streamlined experience navigating TSA checkpoints, especially during the holiday travel period. Digital ID securely saves your passport details directly on your device. Your information remains encrypted consistently. Apple lacks the ability to track your Digital ID usage.

Upon showing your Digital ID, you have control over the information shared with the TSA. You can review the request displayed on your device and authenticate via Face ID or Touch ID. This enhances security, preventing unauthorized ID access.

Digital ID is accepted for identity verification at specific TSA lanes during domestic travel. It cannot be used for international flights or at border crossings. Apple plans to expand support to select hotels, retail locations, and online platforms that require age or ID verification.

To add a Digital ID to your Apple Wallet, some prerequisites must be met. First, you need a current, valid U.S. passport. Additionally, you’ll need an iPhone 11 or a newer model with iOS 26.1 or a more recent version.

If your iPhone’s software isn’t up-to-date, you can update to iOS 26.1 by navigating to Settings, selecting General, then Software Update, and adhering to the on-screen steps. Ensure your phone is charging and linked to Wi-Fi prior to commencing the update.

The Wallet’s Digital ID is functional only at certain TSA checkpoints for domestic travel. It doesn’t substitute a physical passport. Therefore, you should still have your physical passport or driver’s license readily available should the TSA require it. Keep your physical passport with you for all international trips or when crossing borders.

Google users are also able to store a digital representation of their U.S. passport within Google Wallet. This alternative is viable at TSA checkpoints equipped to handle digital IDs for domestic journeys, similar to Apple’s offering. You’ll still need to have your physical passport or license as a backup for TSA inspections. Setup is quick, usually taking only a few minutes.
