Build Mode commences from the outset: Forethought AI's journey to product-market fit

In the inaugural episode of the Build Mode podcast, Isabelle Johannessen, the host, engages in conversation with Deon Nicholas, the co-founder of Forethought AI, to delve into the essential elements required to establish a long-lasting company with and for its clientele from the very beginning.

Build Mode represents TechCrunch’s fresh podcast that uncovers the authentic process of startup creation – the intricate, practical, and candid reality. Season 1, titled “Product, Meet Market,” transcends the concept of product-market fit to scrutinize all facets of delivering your product to customers, encompassing identifying the suitable audience, gaining their confidence, and transforming initial momentum into sustained growth.

From the outset, Nicholas and his team prioritized addressing genuine challenges instead of pursuing transient trends or inflated company valuations. He firmly advocates that customer validation is more important than VC interest, and that once Forethought provided demonstrable value to actual users, the recognition and valuations materialized organically.

His “7-Failure Rule” encourages founders to prioritize iterative development over striving for perfection and to anticipate some setbacks before discovering what truly resonates.

The Forethought team maintained a lean structure, concentrated on defining its ideal customer profile, and intensely focused on genuine customer frustrations rather than superficial features. Nicholas points out that early adopters aren’t always explicit about what’s not effective, so founders must develop the ability to interpret underlying sentiments.

This perspective fueled Forethought’s breakthrough performance at TechCrunch Disrupt 2018, where the company proceeded to secure victory in the Startup Battlefield. In the lead-up to the competition, Nicholas characterized the experience as a “constructive pressure environment,” accelerating efforts to obtain as many paying customer endorsements as possible prior to the presentation. This dedication proved fruitful, stimulating investor interest and securing a $9 million Series A, thereby shaping the nascent stages of the AI revolution.

Although investor enthusiasm rapidly escalated, Nicholas asserts that the company’s long-term viability arose from concentration, not fervor. In his view, achieving startup success transcends mere hype or charismatic leadership – it involves crafting a product that customers value sufficiently to remain loyal.
