Texas-based startup Janta Power has raised $5.5 million in seed funding to further develop its next-generation solar power towers, a vertical alternative to traditional flat solar farms. The funding round was spearheaded by MaC Venture Capital, with additional backing from Collab Capital. The investment highlights significant confidence in 3D solar systems with the potential to transform renewable energy globally.
Conventional solar panels occupy vast flat expanses on rooftops or in open fields. This method consumes substantial land and fails to maximize the day’s sunlight. While the Sun traverses the sky, flat panels are most effective at capturing energy only when the Sun is directly above.
Janta Power employs a different strategy. The company’s rotating solar towers stack panels in a vertical arrangement, creating a compact three-dimensional structure that maximizes sunlight capture throughout the day. Envision it as the solar equivalent of a skyscraper: greater power output from a smaller land footprint.

Each tower incorporates smart tracking software that monitors the Sun’s movement from sunrise to sunset. By continuously adjusting its orientation, the system harvests more sunlight compared to traditional stationary panels. This design enables the towers to generate approximately 50% more energy while utilizing only one-third of the land space required by flat-panel systems.

Due to their vertical positioning, the towers are able to capture sunlight during the early morning and late afternoon hours, when flat arrays are at their least efficient. This results in a more consistent flow of electricity throughout the day, lessening the strain on power grids and minimizing the reliance on short-term backup power plants.
Janta’s towers are also engineered for resilience. Each structure is designed to withstand winds of up to 170 miles per hour. The towers are constructed with robust steel frames and modular foundations, facilitating straightforward installation across a variety of environments.
Pilot programs are currently underway at Munich International Airport, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, and facilities operated by Aena, which manages more than 70 airports worldwide.
The company’s 3D configuration provides each site with a capacity factor of around 32%, compared to approximately 22% for flat panels. This increased efficiency reduces the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) to approximately $0.05 per kilowatt-hour, significantly lower than the global average of $0.15.
This advantage can enhance the accessibility of renewable power for industries like data centers, universities, and telecom companies that require dependable and consistent energy.

For businesses and communities, Janta Power’s technology could translate to smaller solar installations that yield greater energy output for less expense.
