TikTok is set to reward you with badges for cutting back on your doomscrolling habits.

TikTok is introducing updated digital well-being resources, such as an affirmation journal and a background sound generator, designed to support its users’ mental well-being. The social media platform also announced it will award badges to users who manage their TikTok usage.

The company is updating its screen time management section and adding new functionalities. These include an affirmation journal featuring over 120 prompts to help users define their daily intentions, a sound generator offering calming sounds like rain or ocean waves, and a breathing exercise feature. The company stated that the section will also include content from creators discussing limiting screen time, utilizing parental controls, and customizing feeds.

TikTok is also introducing new badges to reward users, particularly teenagers, who use the platform responsibly. The company mentioned it had reviewed academic research on digital well-being and discovered that overly strict tools could negatively impact teenagers.

To acquire these badges, users must fulfill various objectives. Users can achieve the sleep hours objective by abstaining from using the platform during nighttime. They can also utilize the new meditation features to earn a badge. TikTok is also awarding badges to users who establish a daily screen time limit and adhere to it. Additional badges are available for reviewing the weekly screen time summary and encouraging others to participate in these activities.

The company noted that during initial testing, they observed increased user engagement with the new well-being section compared to the previous screen time menu, with the affirmation journal being the most utilized feature.

TikTok stated it will provide a link to these resources when a user is active on the app during nighttime or when they reach their daily screen time limit.

The company introduced new parental control features in July, enabling guardians to block specific accounts and receive alerts when teens post a public video or story. Over the past month, several tech companies, including Meta, YouTube, OpenAI, and Discord, have implemented new safety measures to enhance teen safety.
