A new function recently launched by X seemed to expose that numerous right-leaning “America First” profiles are situated beyond U.S. borders. However, the accuracy of this data is uncertain.
X’s new “About This Account” tool provides details such as when a user registered and how they obtained the app, but the geographic location data is drawing significant focus.
Left-wing influencer Micah Erfan posted a collection of MAGA accounts apparently located in Japan, New Zealand, Pakistan, and Thailand, commenting, “This spells absolute disaster for the online right.”
Numerous accounts generating discussion, such as @American, supposedly in Pakistan, have relatively few followers, while others boast hundreds of thousands.
X’s product director, Nikita Bier, stated on Saturday that the function is being implemented worldwide, calling it “a crucial initial step in safeguarding the global town square’s integrity.” Some users, however, have reported significant inaccuracies in their listed locations. Bier admitted that the “data wasn’t completely accurate for older accounts” and indicated that “some minor flaws… will be fixed by Tuesday.”
The Verge pointed out that while rage-bait accounts and troll farms undoubtedly exist outside the U.S., many of the provided locations appear doubtful, with potential causes including travel, international teams, VPNs, or outdated IP addresses.
