Apple revealed Friday it has secured the exclusive U.S. rights to broadcast Formula 1. As part of a fresh five-year arrangement, the tech company and Formula 1 will make Apple TV the only streaming venue for all Formula 1 races starting with the 2026 season, taking over from ESPN, the current broadcaster.
Apple TV subscribers will have access to every practice, qualifying, Sprint event, and Grand Prix. According to Apple, select races, along with all practice sessions, will also be available for free on the Apple TV app throughout the season.
Reports indicate Apple bid between $140 and $150 million per year for the rights, considerably more than the $85 million ESPN currently spends each year for Formula 1. The Apple agreement is worth approximately $750 million throughout its five-year duration.
This announcement comes shortly after Apple changed the name of its streaming service from “Apple TV+” to simply “Apple TV,” dropping the plus sign.
It also occurs after Apple partnered with Formula 1 on the film “F1 The Movie,” starring Brad Pitt, an original production that earned $629 million globally this year and became the highest-grossing sports film in history. The movie is scheduled to premiere on Apple TV on December 12.
Apple also stated that, in addition to broadcasting Formula 1, it intends to promote the sport using Apple News, Apple Maps, Apple Music, and Apple Fitness+. Additionally, the Apple Sports app will provide real-time updates for each qualifying session, Sprint, and race of every Grand Prix during the season, complete with live leaderboards, driver and constructor standings for the season, Live Activities for lock screen tracking, and a Home Screen widget.
Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Services, stated in a press release, “We’re excited about growing our relationship with Formula 1 and giving Apple TV subscribers in the U.S. front-row access to one of the world’s most thrilling and rapidly expanding sports. “2026 will be a game-changing year for Formula 1, featuring new teams, regulations, cars, and the best drivers; we’re eager to give our customers high-quality, cutting-edge coverage in a way that only Apple can.”
