Jake Moody boots decisive field goal in initial outing for Bears.

An intense, rain-soaked Monday night matchup between the Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders became a nail-biter for the two long-standing NFL teams.

Late in the fourth quarter, Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels’ fumbled handoff was recovered by the Bears’ defense. Caleb Williams and D’Andre Swift then drove the offense downfield, leading to a field goal attempt by Jake Moody. Moody had just joined the team to fill in for the injured Cairo Santos.

With three seconds remaining and a persistent drizzle, Moody successfully kicked a 38-yard field goal, securing a 25-24 victory for the Bears. Chicago’s record improved to 3-2, while the Commanders dropped to 3-3.

The Bears quickly established a 13-0 lead in the first half. Moody appeared confident, making two field goals, and Caleb Williams added a rushing touchdown in the second quarter.

The Commanders narrowed the gap when Daniels connected with Chris Moore for a 22-yard touchdown. Washington added to their score with a Matt Gay field goal after an eight-play, 25-yard drive in the third quarter.

Following Moody’s third field goal of the game, the Bears’ offense went silent.

Daniels engineered consecutive scoring drives spanning the end of the third and start of the fourth quarters. He threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Luke McCaffrey, followed by a 6-yard touchdown to Zach Ertz.

Williams and the Bears responded swiftly, with the second-year quarterback hitting Swift on a short pass. Swift evaded several Commanders defenders for a 55-yard touchdown. However, Chicago failed on the 2-point conversion attempt and trailed by two points.

Moody was accurate on his field-goal attempts, despite one being blocked.

Despite a Super Bowl LVIII record, the San Francisco 49ers released him just a few weeks into the 2025 season.

Moody then made his mark in the Bears’ record books, achieving the most field goals in a Bears debut with four, according to ESPN.

“It’s always good to have a fresh start. I always believed in myself, believed in my teammates. Shoutout to (long snapper Scott Daly) and (holder Tory Taylor). They made the operation really easy on me. The same with the (offensive) line up front, protecting great on that last one. You can’t draw it up any better,” he told ESPN’s Lisa Salters.

Williams completed 17 of 29 passes for 252 yards and one touchdown, distributing passes to eight different receivers. Swift led the team with two receptions for 67 yards, while Luther Burden III had four receptions for 51 yards.

Swift also rushed for 108 yards on 14 carries.

Daniels completed 19 of 26 passes for 211 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. The Bears’ defense recorded three turnovers.
