UAB parts ways with Super Bowl-winning head coach Trent Dilfer following lopsided defeat.

Trent Dilfer was let go by the UAB Blazers on Sunday, as announced after the team’s record fell to 2-4 for the season after they were defeated by the Florida Atlantic Owls.

Prior to the 2023 season, the Super Bowl-winning quarterback became UAB’s head coach after a successful stint coaching high school. During his time coaching UAB, he was never able to achieve a winning season.

UAB athletics director Mark Ingram stated that “We have decided to separate from Head Football Coach Trent Dilfer. We concur that — regrettably — our performance on the field has failed to meet the level of success we anticipate for the program.” “This choice will enable us to advance the program’s long-term objectives most effectively.”

Ingram announced Alex Mortensen as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

Ingram continued, “I appreciate Coach Dilfer’s efforts and wish him well. During his time at UAB, he demonstrated class, worked incredibly hard, and was dedicated. Although his efforts did not lead to a winning record, every young man who played for him will gain from having him as a coach.”

The 53-33 defeat by Florida Atlantic was the last straw for the university. It was the Owls’ third victory of the year.

From 2019 until 2022, Dilfer served as the head coach of Lipscomb Academy in Tennessee. Before being hired by UAB, he had a 44-10 record with the school.

He was a player in the NFL for 13 years, playing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Baltimore Ravens, Seattle Seahawks, Cleveland Browns, and San Francisco 49ers.

He and the Ravens were Super Bowl champions.
