‘SNL’ Honors Diane Keaton Following Passing at 79

After Diane Keaton passed away at the age of 79, Saturday Night Live made certain to offer a tribute.

Following the news of Keaton’s death, the show presented a tribute card at the conclusion of the Saturday, October 12, broadcast. The black-and-white picture featured Keaton with a wide smile, dressed in a collared shirt and tie. Her name was featured alongside the image.

The official account of the NBC show posted a photo on X, with the caption, “Diane Keaton,” accompanied by a red heart emoji.

Amy Poehler, the host and an SNL alum, also subtly honored the deceased actress by sporting a collared shirt and tie during the goodbyes, just before the show ended. (Role Model was the musical act on the Saturday episode.)

A representative for Keaton’s family informed People on Saturday that she passed away in California and stated that they would not be providing more information while requesting “for privacy.” Keaton is survived by her two kids: daughter Dexter and son Duke, whom she welcomed via adoption in 1996 and 2001, respectively.

Us Weekly reached out seeking their statement.

The next day, Carole Bayer Sager, a close friend of Keaton, spoke openly regarding the late actress’ health before her passing.

“I saw her two or three weeks ago, and she was very thin,” Sager stated to People in an interview released on Sunday, October 12. “She had lost a lot of weight.”

Sager shared that she and Keaton were in touch less this year, mentioning that the wildfires in California in January caused the actress to spend time in Palm Springs.

“She had to go to Palm Springs because her house had been damaged inside, and they had to clean everything,” Sager recalled on Sunday. “She was down there for some time, and when she came back, I was surprised by how much weight she’d lost.”

Numerous celebrities have expressed their grief over Keaton’s death. SNL cast member Ashley Padilla, who previously worked as Keaton’s assistant, paid her respects to the Father of the Bride actress via social media.

“I will never forget you. I will always love you. And I will miss you all of the time,” she posted on her Instagram Story, also sharing several images of the actress. “Thank you for everything, Diane. You changed my life.”

While Keaton and Poehler never worked together — Keaton was never on SNL — the Annie Hall actress had been vocal about her admiration for the SNL star.

“I need to share something regarding a new discovery,” Keaton posted on X in 2014. “I’ve become a fan of Amy Poehler. … My 13-year-old son Duke and I have watched three years of Parks and Rec episodes over four months. Last night, we saw Amy get married. That sealed it for me. My love for her is everlasting.”

She added, “Amy Poehler is capable of anything. Not only is she incredibly funny, but she’s also charming, sweet, warm, and beautiful. Especially as a bride.”

Saturday Night Live is broadcast on NBC on Saturdays at 11:30 p.m. ET.
