'Boston Blue' Premiere Summary: Danny's Son, Sean, Lies in a Coma Following Actor Change

After the recasting, Boston Blue began strongly with Donnie Wahlberg‘s Danny going to Boston because his son had a bad injury.

In the debut episode, which was broadcast on Friday, October 17, Sean’s (Mika Amonsen) night with his friend Jonah somehow resulted in them rescuing individuals from a burning building. During the heroic acts, Sean was hit by an explosion, which led to him falling into a coma.

Danny journeyed from New York to Boston to be at his son’s side and somehow ended up collaborating with Jonah’s sister, Lena (Sonequa Martin-Green), to solve a murder. Danny’s sister, Erin (Bridget Moynahan), came to visit him and offered support by staying by Sean’s side.

As the episode ended, Danny and Erin began praying at the right moment for Sean to awaken. Although Sean was unable to speak yet, Danny emphasized that he was “not going anywhere.”

Amonsen debuted as Sean three months after the announcement that the role of Wahlberg’s youngest son had been recast. Previously, Andrew Terraciano portrayed Sean on Blue Bloods before Boston Blue premiered.

CBS described the show, saying, “Sean has moved to Boston to begin a new chapter as a Boston PD patrolman. Sean dedicated himself to continuing his family’s legacy but wanted to do it on his own terms, which involved joining a department outside of his hometown. Danny’s choice to remain in Boston offers this father and son a chance to build a stronger connection.”

Audiences got to know Danny on Blue Bloods, which aired from 2010 until 2024. The spinoff expands Danny’s viewpoint now that viewers are invested in his story — particularly his romance with Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez), who made an appearance in the Boston Blue premiere.

Wahlberg, 56, told Fox News Digital in June that he kept thinking that if he really wanted Blue Bloods to continue, this was a chance to make it happen, when asked if agreeing to Boston Blue was a “challenge.”

Wahlberg was also questioned regarding the level of crossover between Blue Bloods and Boston Blue.

He mentioned that viewers are wondering how a Blue Bloods spinoff can continue without the entire family, and he agreed with that concern.

Wahlberg stated that discussions have taken place about how Boston Blue will honor its Blue Bloods roots. Wahlberg added that any Reagan family member is just a “phone call away.”

He shared at the time that Danny is entering this new world, but since he’s a Reagan, he won’t be alone and a Reagan will always be just a phone call away, though he couldn’t reveal much.

Wahlberg went on to say that Danny would not abandon the traditions that the Reagans have.

Blue Bloods can be streamed on Paramount+. Boston Blue is broadcast on CBS Fridays at 10 p.m. ET.
