Jesús Montero, a former standout for the New York Yankees, has passed away following a motorcycle accident. He was 35 years old.
The official social media account of the MLB team shared news of the former player’s death on Sunday, October 19, stating, “The Yankees are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jesús Montero. We send our sincerest condolences to his family & loved ones.”
The Yankees account also shared a photo of Montero in his uniform, smiling for the camera, alongside the message. Text accompanying the image read, “Jesús Montero. 1989-2025.”
Montero, who also played for the Seattle Mariners, was honored by the MLB team on Sunday.
The team’s official social media account posted, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of former Mariner Jesús Montero. Our hearts go out to his family, friends and loved ones,” along with a blue heart emoji.
A GoFundMe campaign had been launched for Montero on October 6 after he was involved in a “serious motorcycle accident.”
According to the fundraising page, “He is currently in critical condition, with multiple fractures in his leg, several broken ribs, and severe lung and organ injuries. Doctors have kept him in an induced coma to help with oxygenation and stabilization, and he is also undergoing dialysis to support his kidneys.”
The message further stated, “Jesús is not only a great athlete but also a kind, generous, and big-hearted man. Those who know him understand his strength and fighting spirit — but today, he needs our help to keep fighting off the field.”
The GoFundMe page highlighted that the necessary medical and surgical costs, supplies, and treatments for his recovery were “extremely high.”
The post explained, “That’s why we have created this GoFundMe campaign to help cover his medical expenses and ensure he receives the best possible care. All funds raised will be managed by his brother, Jesús Rafael Montero, who is overseeing the current medical costs.”
In an update posted on October 16, Montero’s family conveyed their “deepest gratitude for all your support, prayers, and messages — they have been the greatest source of strength for Jesús and our family.”
The message indicated, “Jesús remains in the ICU, under critical condition. He continues on dialysis, as his kidneys have not yet responded. He recently underwent surgery to stabilize his leg, which was successful, but he still needs to undergo a chest surgery, which is complex but necessary for his recovery.”
The statement went on, “We know the road ahead is long, but we trust in his strength and in all the love and support you’ve shown. That is why we continue to ask for your prayers and financial support through this campaign, which has been essential to continue his treatment.”
The family expressed their thanks to donors from the “bottom of [their] hearts,” adding, “thank you for being with us — for your kind words, your time, your prayers, and your generosity. Each gesture of support gives us strength to keep going by Jesús’ side.”
Montero first played in the major leagues with the Yankees in 2011 before being traded to the Mariners the following year. His final major league appearance was in 2015, and he also had stints with the Toronto Blue Jays and the Baltimore Orioles.
