Ron Conway, a prominent figure in venture capital, has resigned from the Salesforce Foundation following remarks made by Benioff regarding the National Guard.

According to the New York Times, Ron Conway, the founder of the venture capital firm SV Angel, which is famous for its early investments in companies like Google, Airbnb, and Meta, has stepped down from the Salesforce Foundation. This resignation comes after Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff stated the previous week that he “fully supported” President Trump and believed that National Guard troops should be patrolling the streets of San Francisco.

Conway had served on the board of the Salesforce Foundation, an organization dedicated to promoting education and workforce development for underprivileged youth, for a decade. The New York Times reports that, according to tax filings, the philanthropic organization contributed $36 million in 2023 and concluded the year with $400 million in assets.

Benioff and Conway have maintained a friendship for a quarter of a century and have generally shared progressive political beliefs throughout that period. However, Conway is reportedly disturbed by the Salesforce CEO’s present ideological stances.

Conway stated in an email to Benioff obtained by the New York Times on Thursday, “It deeply saddens me to say that, given your recent remarks and failure to grasp their implications, I scarcely recognize the person I have admired for so long.”

Benioff lauded Elon Musk’s initiatives to improve government efficiency in an interview with the New York Times last week, and he claimed that he was not keeping up with reports about immigration raids or Trump’s attacks on the press. This is noteworthy considering Benioff’s ownership of Time magazine, which he acquired in 2018.

Despite having previously backed the Democratic Party, Benioff is among the numerous prominent tech leaders and investors who have now expressed support for Trump.

The disagreement between Benioff and Conway took place during Salesforce’s Dreamforce conference, one of the biggest events that San Francisco hosts each year. Neither Salesforce nor Conway offered a prompt response to a request for comment.
